What is Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana
India is a country of more than 24 crore households. Out of 10 crores households, 10 crore families still rely on firewood, coal for cooking. The smoke from burning fire-wood or coal leads to environmental pollution as well as serious health hazards for children/women. In fact, In the WHO report it is clearly mentioned that this fuel smoke causes respiratory diseases and the smoke inhaled is equivalent to 400 cigarettes per hour.
Hence, the government of India took the initiative to provide clean cooking fuel to all 5 crore women belonging to below poverty line(BPL). The government will provide Rs 1600/ per connection in the next 3 years. As a result of clean and hygenic fuel, they will not need to compromise their health with smokey kitchens and collection of un-hygiene fire-woods. Through, this initiative the primary objective is to safeguard the health of women and children of our country.
The scheme was launched by the Government of India on 1st May 2016. The purpose of the scheme is to empower women, especially in rural areas. Hence, the LPG connection will be issued in the name women of that family. Initially, Rs 8000 crore has been allocated to implement this scheme. To identify the beneficiary, the government will use socio-economic caste census data.
The salient features of PMUY scheme are: –
- LPG Connection will be issued in the name of women of the BPL family, Only condition is that there are no existing LPG connections in the name of any family member of the family.
